On November 20th, 2024, the South County Chambers of Commerce hosted a networking luncheon featuring Eric Daniels, PG&E Public Policy and External Affairs Expert for San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, at the South County Conference & Event Center. Attendees gained valuable insights into PG&E’s ongoing efforts to enhance public safety, mitigate wildfire risks, and modernize infrastructure to ensure reliable energy delivery. The presentation covered a range of topics, from innovative technologies like Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS) to community resources aimed at supporting resilience and preparedness. This update provided chamber members with actionable information to help their businesses and communities thrive in an evolving energy landscape.

PG&E shared a detailed overview of their ongoing efforts to enhance safety, reduce wildfire risks, and support reliable power supply during the recent Chamber of Commerce meeting. Here’s what you need to know: 

Wildfire Risk Mitigation 

PG&E is investing in several strategies to minimize wildfire risks: 

• System Hardening: Strengthening infrastructure in fire-prone areas by installing more resilient poles, wider cross-arms, and insulated powerlines. These improvements aim to protect against tree strikes and vegetation-related hazards. 

• Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS): A groundbreaking technology that automatically shuts off power within one-tenth of a second when a fault or potential fire hazard is detected. This has led to a significant reduction in wildfire ignitions. 

• Vegetation Management: Regular inspections of 100,000 miles of powerlines and the removal of over one million trees annually that pose safety concerns. 

Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) 

When conditions such as low humidity, high winds, and dry vegetation elevate wildfire risks, PG&E implements PSPS events as a last resort. Customers are notified in advance, where possible, through automated calls, texts, and emails. Updates are also shared via PG&E’s website and social media channels. 

Innovative Technologies 

• Sectionalizers and Fault Indicators: These devices help localize faults and reduce the extent of power outages, enabling quicker repairs and minimizing disruptions. 

• Weather Monitoring Network: With 1,500 weather stations and 600 high-definition cameras, PG&E has developed one of the most extensive utility-owned networks to predict and respond to severe weather conditions. 

Community Safety Resources 

PG&E offers several tools and platforms to keep communities informed and prepared: 

• Wildfire Safety Resources: Accessible at pge.com/wildfiresafety, providing comprehensive information on prevention and preparedness. 

• Safety Action Center: Offering free, confidential 24/7 support through 211ca.org. 

• Kids’ Safety Resources: Educational tools available at kidsemergencysafety.com to teach children about emergency preparedness. 

Rotating Load Shedding 

In cases of high energy demand, PG&E collaborates with the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) to manage grid stability through controlled load-shedding events. While these are implemented only when necessary, Flex Alerts encourage customers to conserve energy during peak times to prevent widespread outages. 

Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP) Update 

Under Senate Bill (SB) 846, PG&E has submitted a 20-year license renewal application to the NRC for extend operations at DCPP. The State of California has approved for five years. This measure ensures a reliable energy supply while regulatory review continues.
